Fuel cell technology research group
Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that convert chemical energy of a reaction directly into electrical energy. In recent years, there has been considerable interest on the use of fuel cells as substitution for fossil fuels as power generation. There are several kinds of fuel cells, but some of them are become available commercially for industrial application and the others are in research level in laboratory. These fuel cells are including of:
1-Proton Exchange membrane fuel cell
2-Direct Methanol fuel cell
3-Molten Carbonate fuel cell
4-Solid Oxide fuel cell
5-Alkaline fuelcell
6-Zinc-Air fuel cell
7-Phosphiric Acid fuel cell
8-Microbial fuel cell
9-Formic Acid fuel cell
One of the main attractions of fuel cells relative to the other power sources using any hydrocarbon fuel is the potential to generate power with minimal or zero emissions. Among various kinds of fuel cells, direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) has advantages of high energy density, low operating temperature, easier fuel delivery and storage, easier system design and simpler operation. DMFC fuel cells are viewed as one of the most environmentally friendly energy conversion system due to high electrical efficiency for portable application.
Fuel Cell Technology Research Group has started its work in 2006. The main activities of this group are on methanol fuel cell and polymeric fuel cell. At the first, a testing station system for PEM and DMFC with a capacity of 1.5 kW is designed and built in this research group.
1.5kw of DMFC
In 2008, a direct methanol fuel cell system (DMFC) with a nominal power of 500 watts and total power of 1,050 watts was built and tested in this research group.
DMFC 500 watt
In 2009, a prototype PEM fuel cell system with weight of 3 kg and the net power were 500 Watt was made and installed on student contest UAV.
PEM fuel cell 500 Watt
In 2010, a 1 kW DMFC system that the promotion of 500 watt methanol fuel cell system is built.
DMFC 1Kw
In this research group an Ultrasonic methanol makeup sensor for using in DMFC system was built.

In this research group, at least 500 scientific journal and conference papers have been published inside and outside of the country.
At least 80 postgraduate master and Ph.D. students are graduated in the issues related to the fuel cell.
